Digging + Trenching
From utility installation to landscaping and large-scale excavation, even minor mistakes can lead to costly damage, delays, and hazardous conditions. Professional planning and execution are essential to ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently.
PREPARING FOR EXCAVATION AND UTILITIES
Digging and trenching might seem like straightforward tasks to homeowners and business owners, especially when managing a property improvement or construction project. However, beneath the surface—both literally and figuratively—these activities are laden with risks that can lead to significant financial, legal, and safety consequences.
Whether it’s preparing a site for landscaping, installing utilities, or handling larger excavation projects, the margin for error is slim. Mistakes can jeopardize not only the project but also the well-being of workers, the property, and even the surrounding environment.

Do you know about the Underground Plant Protection Act?
In Indiana, homeowners and businesses must comply with the Underground Plant Protection Law (IC 8-1-26), which mandates specific safety protocols for any excavation project. Whether you are planting a small shrub or digging a deep trench for construction, following these steps is a legal requirement designed to prevent utility damage, service disruptions, and physical injury.

Hiring Excavation Professionals is Non-Negotiable
Given the risks outlined above, it’s clear that digging and trenching are not DIY-friendly tasks. The same can be said for hiring unqualified or inexperienced contractors, whose lack of expertise can amplify the dangers and lead to substandard results. Here’s why working with trained professionals is essential.
1. Local Regulations and Permits
Excavation projects often require adherence to strict local codes and ordinances. PE Industries is deeply familiar with Indiana regulations and can ensure all necessary permits are obtained before work begins. This eliminates the risk of fines or delays stemming from non-compliance.
2. Utility Location
Our qualified excavation team is trained to assess and navigate the complexities of underground utilities. We utilize advanced techniques and equipment to identify utility lines and plan the excavation process accordingly. This minimizes the risk of accidental damage.
3. Safety Measures and Equipment
PE Industries prioritizes safety, implementing measures such as trench boxes, shoring, and proper equipment operation protocols. Our training ensures we can respond effectively to unexpected challenges, reducing the likelihood of injuries or accidents.
4. Environmental Responsibility
The PE Industries team is well-versed in environmental best practices. We take steps to minimize the impact of our work on the surrounding ecosystem, manage soil and waste disposal responsibly, and comply with environmental regulations.
While hiring a professional service may seem like an upfront expense, it often saves money in the long run by preventing costly mistakes, project delays, and repairs. Additionally, professionals deliver high-quality results, ensuring the work is completed correctly the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Permit requirements vary significantly by county and municipality (e.g., Tippecanoe County vs. Carroll County). Generally, any work within a public right-of-way or involving utility connections requires a permit. We handle the procurement of all necessary Local and State Permits as part of our service.
Indiana 811 (also known as "Call Before You Dig") is the state’s underground utility location service. By law, anyone planning to dig must notify them at least two full working days beforehand. As your professional contractor, we manage this process to ensure all gas, water, electric, and fiber lines are clearly marked.
We strictly adhere to OSHA Standard 1926 Subpart P. This includes requirements for protective systems, daily inspections by a Competent Person, and safe access/egress for any trench deeper than 4 feet.
Indiana law (IC 8-1-26-20) defines the tolerance zone as the width of the underground facility plus 24 inches on either side of the marks. Within this zone, excavators must use non-invasive methods, such as hand tools, to safely expose the utility before using mechanical equipment.
OSHA defines a Competent Person as someone capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures. Every one of our job sites is overseen by a staff member with this specific certification.
"Spoils" are the dirt removed from the trench. We maintain a minimum distance of 2 feet from the edge of the excavation to prevent the weight of the dirt from causing a cave-in. If the site is too small, we haul the spoils off-site immediately.
In Indiana’s varied soil types, any trench 5 feet deep or greater must have a protective system (benching, shoring, or shielding). If our Competent Person detects hazardous soil conditions, we may implement these systems at shallower depths to ensure worker safety.
Much of Indiana consists of "Type C" soil—sandy, gravelly, or submerged soil that is the least stable. For these conditions, we utilize Trench Shields (Trench Boxes) or professional Shoring to prevent cave-ins, which are the leading cause of excavation fatalities.
Excavated soil and other heavy equipment must be kept at least 2 feet away from the edge of the trench to prevent materials from falling back in or causing a cave-in.
In North Central Indiana, the frost line can reach 36 to 48 inches. We ensure that footings and water lines are buried below this depth to prevent heaving and freezing during our harsh Midwestern winters.
In regions with high water tables, we utilize dewatering pumps and specialized "mucking" techniques to stabilize the trench floor before laying pipe or pouring concrete.
For residential trenching (such as utility repairs or backyard drainage), we use Mini-Excavators and Compact Track Loaders. These machines provide high power with a small footprint, minimizing damage to your landscaping and driveway.
