As your professional contractor, we manage this process to ensure all gas, water, electric, and fiber lines are clearly marked.
We strictly adhere to OSHA Standard 1926 Subpart P. This includes requirements for protective systems, daily inspections by a Competent Person, and safe access/egress for any trench deeper than 4 feet.
Indiana law (IC 8-1-26-20) defines the tolerance zone as the width of the underground facility plus 24 inches on either side of the marks. Within this zone, excavators must use non-invasive methods, such as hand tools, to safely expose the utility before using mechanical equipment.
OSHA defines a Competent Person as someone capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures. Every one of our job sites is overseen by a staff member with this specific certification.
"Spoils" are the dirt removed from the trench. We maintain a minimum distance of 2 feet from the edge of the excavation to prevent the weight of the dirt from causing a cave-in. If the site is too small, we haul the spoils off-site immediately.
In Indiana’s varied soil types, any trench 5 feet deep or greater must have a protective system (benching, shoring, or shielding). If our Competent Person detects hazardous soil conditions, we may implement these systems at shallower depths to ensure worker safety.
Much of Indiana consists of "Type C" soil—sandy, gravelly, or submerged soil that is the least stable. For these conditions, we utilize Trench Shields (Trench Boxes) or professional Shoring to prevent cave-ins, which are the leading cause of excavation fatalities.
Excavated soil and other heavy equipment must be kept at least 2 feet away from the edge of the trench to prevent materials from falling back in or causing a cave-in.
In North Central Indiana, the frost line can reach 36 to 48 inches. We ensure that footings and water lines are buried below this depth to prevent heaving and freezing during our harsh Midwestern winters.
In regions with high water tables, we utilize dewatering pumps and specialized "mucking" techniques to stabilize the trench floor before laying pipe or pouring concrete.
